Tamil Nadu Government honors families of organ donors

A ceremony to honor the families of organ donors was held as part of an event organized by the State Organ Donation Authority to mark Tamil Nadu Organ Donation Day.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. K.G. Arunraj participated in the event via video conference and delivered an address. Health Secretary Dr. Darez Ahmed and Dr. S. Uma, IAS, Project Director of the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP), attended the event in person and honored the families of brain-dead donors.

Tributes were paid to the organ donors, and gratitude was expressed to their families.

At the moment a person suffers brain death, the compassionate, humane, and courageous decision made by their family can bestow new life and a fresh beginning upon many others. It restores sight to someone languishing in darkness, gives a new heartbeat to a young boy yearning to live, and provides new lungs and kidneys to a critically ill family breadwinner thereby sustaining the entire family.

A single brain-dead donor can save eight lives and improve the quality of life for more than fifty people.
